The Studio

A workshop where traditional looms meet contemporary design

Ali Madani Studio is a textile design atelier specializing in handwoven rugs, tapestries, and decorative pieces. We work with virgin wool, organic cotton, and natural dyes, combining time-honored weaving techniques with a modern sensibility for color and form.

Our clients are homeowners, interior designers, and commercial spaces seeking pieces with character—objects that carry the mark of the hand that made them. We guide each commission from the first palette conversation to the final knot, ensuring every rug responds to the light, scale, and rhythm of its intended room.

We believe a handwoven rug is not a decorative afterthought but a foundational layer of a room's atmosphere. That conviction shapes how we select fibers, how we mix dyes, and how we listen to the specific needs of each project.

Studio Milestones

A Journey Woven in Time

From a single loom in a small workshop to a recognized name in contemporary textile art, each stage of the studio's evolution reflects a deepening commitment to craft, material, and design.

2016

The First Loom

Ali Madani establishes a modest workshop with a single wooden loom, focusing on small tapestries and learning the nuances of natural dyeing from local artisans.

2019

First Interior Design Collaboration

A commission for a boutique hotel lobby introduces the studio to the world of interior design, leading to a series of custom rugs for hospitality and commercial spaces.

2021

Expanding the Team and Workshop

The studio grows to a team of six weavers and dyers, moving to a larger space with dedicated areas for wool preparation, dyeing, and finishing. A second and third loom are added.

2023

Recognition in Contemporary Textile Art

Selected for a group exhibition on contemporary weaving, the studio gains wider recognition for its distinctive blend of traditional technique and modern geometric design.

2025

A Dedicated Atelier for Custom Commissions

The studio opens a dedicated atelier space for client consultations, showcasing material samples, dye palettes, and works in progress. The focus remains on bespoke pieces for homes and design projects.

The studio's path

From a single loom to a workshop of bespoke textiles

Founded on a respect for traditional weaving, Ali Madani Studio has grown through deliberate choices — embracing natural fibers, slow production, and close collaboration with interior designers.

2016 — The first workshop

Starting with a single wooden loom

The studio began in a small room with one loom and a commitment to natural dyes. Early commissions were modest — a few rugs for local homes — but they established the core principle: every piece is woven start to finish by one artisan.

2019 — Organic wool & cotton

Sourcing materials with intention

A turning point came when we shifted entirely to certified organic cotton and virgin wool from regional farms. This change deepened the texture of our rugs and reduced our environmental footprint, while giving clients a truly natural product.

2022 — Interior design collaborations

Bespoke projects for commercial spaces

As demand grew, we began partnering with interior designers on larger commissions — hotel lobbies, boutique offices, and showrooms. These projects pushed us to refine our palette and pattern library, always keeping the handwoven character intact.

Key decisions that shaped the studio

  • Adopted a transparent production timeline — each rug is delivered with a clear schedule from dyeing to finishing.
  • Limited the palette to natural dyes only, which required years of experimentation to achieve consistent, lasting tones.
  • Built a small team of weavers, each trained in traditional knotting and finishing techniques.

Noticeable results

Today, the studio produces around 40 custom pieces a year, with about half going to interior design projects. We've developed a signature style — geometric motifs softened by natural textures — that clients recognize and request.

One of our most rewarding milestones was a series of rugs for a boutique hotel, where each room received a unique pattern based on local desert landscapes. That project reinforced our belief that custom weaving can transform a space into something personal.

Specialty: spatial context & palette mapping

Hand-knotted only. No tufted or machine-made pieces — every rug is woven on a traditional wooden loom.

Small-batch dyeing. Colors are mixed in 5-liter pots, allowing precise control over tone and depth.

3-stage quality check. Each piece is inspected at the loom, after washing, and before packaging.

The studio has completed over 140 custom commissions for private residences, boutique hotels, and design studios across three continents. Lead times are communicated clearly at the start of each project, and every piece is signed and dated by the weaver.
